One of the fascinating things about the Native experience to me and my wine gift basket business is how they are negatively affected by the nature of their surrounding communities.
Out of the California capital city of Sacramento, there are a number of tribes which still live incredibly well. I think one of the reasons behind that is that the communities which surround the city are still doing relatively well economically and don’t have to use the limited resources on the reservation.
Other areas, especially those in Southern California where gaming has given tribes an inordinate amount of money compared to their neighbors, have found themselves having to help support local communities through services like fire departments, police departments and even medical care. In a way, it is interesting how much things have changed, but it would be great to keep all that money more local don’t you think?
